Which side of the road does Malta drive on?

Traffic in Malta keeps to the left. If that differs from home, take time to orient yourself before joining the road and stay attentive when turning or pulling away. Transport Malta publishes the official Road Code ↗; consult the current official guidance for road rules rather than treating a travel guide as a complete legal reference.

Get familiar with the car while parked

Adjust the seat and mirrors, and locate the lights, wipers, demister and parking brake. Check how the gear selector works, especially if you have chosen a transmission different from your usual car. Ask for help before leaving the collection point if a control is unfamiliar. Enter your first destination while stationary and make sure luggage is secure.

Keep your first route simple

Allow time to settle into the vehicle instead of planning a tightly packed first afternoon. Look at the route to your accommodation in advance and check its parking instructions. If you need to change a route or deal with a navigation problem, find a suitable place to stop before using your phone. Avoid setting unrealistic arrival times for yourself.

Check documents and rental permissions

Before travelling, ask the rental provider which driving licence, identification and payment documents it requires. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and the selected rental conditions. Confirm permissions before taking the vehicle on a ferry or outside the areas covered by the agreement. Keep your rental confirmation and the provider’s assistance contact accessible during your trip.

Think about parking and return arrangements

Use marked parking areas, follow local signs and check restrictions at the time you park. Ask your accommodation about access and parking before arrival. On the last day, follow the agreed fuel policy and return instructions, allowing enough time for the handover and onward travel. Keep records of the vehicle condition and any agreed notes from collection.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Before you book

Would an automatic help me feel more comfortable?

An automatic may suit you if it is what you normally drive. Choose the transmission you can operate confidently and take time to learn the controls.

Can I drive my rental car to Gozo?

Check the provider’s ferry and geographical permissions before making plans. Do not assume every reservation permits the same journeys.

Where should I check current road rules?

Consult Transport Malta’s official Road Code and follow the signs and restrictions in force on the road.
